Is it still possible to believe Armstrong didn't dope?Ĭover-ups, an unwillingness to catch dopers, and a more than cosy relationship between Armstrong and former president Hein Verbruggen Hamilton is scathing of the UCI throughout the book.Īs did Floyd Landis, he alleges that Armstrong tested positive for EPO during the 2001 Tour of Switzerland, but that Armstrong "had meetings with people at the lab and it all went away." In fact there is only one question it doesn't answer. ![]() ![]() It is an answer booklet to the questions and uncertainties that have swelled around cycling in recent months and years. What really gives the book its power, though, is that it is not just Hamilton's version of events. Yet limiting the book to a chronicle of cheating misses the most intriguing element the book is a profound assessment of Armstrong's character, told through the turbulent crests and troughs of Hamilton's complex relationship with his idol, mentor, friend, adversary, and bully. The lack of smudges or omissions tempts you to treat the narrative as a work of fiction until Daniel Coyle's explanatory footnotes and interviews with former riders jolt you back down to earth. The clarity and detail of Hamilton's memory is quite remarkable. ![]()

5/29/2023 0 Comments The adoration of jenna fox book![]() ![]() Medical technology is already further than we ever thought possible, and is still growing. All you need is an interest in the plot, a sense of wonder, and a bit of a weakness for suspense.Īs ‘Adoration’ takes place in the ‘not-so-distant future’, as the versa page describes it, it brings to mind questions that are already taking up space in the public eye. While most science fiction requires some ‘basic’ knowledge of the setting, current theories, a master’s degree in science, etc., ‘Adoration’ needs nothing of the sort. Pearson masterfully sculpts this story: its winding staircases, narrow paths, and sharp corners. Albeit drawing on a quintessential plot- the secret you don’t want to know- Mary E. Instead, she goes prying and- like many before her -finds out what, in hindsight, she never wanted to know in the first place. This is the question 17 year old Jenna wants to know more than anything, but will never stoop so low as to ask. “What kind of person was Jenna Fox? Was she someone I even want to remember?” (pg.17) ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments The fuller memorandum![]() ![]() Bob is not your typical suave secret agent he is a civil servant. Once again, Stross combines the most hilarious parts of British bureaucracy with the spoofiest of James Bond spoofs. If that’s not bad enough, Bob’s boss, Angleton, goes missing, and Bob is suspended from work with pay pending an investigation into a civilian fatality he accidentally caused. ![]() ![]() (One guess what this entity does.) The cultists are being manipulated by a bigger, badder, blacker order that wants to bring on CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN (also known as the end of the world) sooner rather than later. In The Fuller Memorandum, Bob and Mo become tangled up in a plot by some cultists to steal Teapot, also known as the Eater of Souls. The two series have a lot in common: each book is a self-contained, madcap thriller with supernatural elements while overall, the series mythology continues to grow and head towards some kind of apocalyptic climax. It’s starting to rank up there with the Dresden Files as far as urban fantasy goes. It’s safe to say that the Laundry Files is my favourite of Charles Stross’ series. ![]() ![]() ![]() Without further ado, we give the floor up to Tia! As a tragic hero, Oedipus elicits the three needed responses from the audience far better than most indeed, Aristotle and subsequent critics have labeled Oedipus the ideal tragic hero. ![]() Clearly, for Aristotle's theory to work, the tragic hero must be a complex and well-constructed character, as in Sophocles' Oedipus the King. Through these attachments the individual members of the audience go through a catharsis, a term which Aristotle borrowed from the medical writers of his day, which means a "refining" - the viewer of a tragedy refines his or her sense of difficult ethical issues through a vicarious experious of such thorny problems. His famous connection between "pity and fear" and "catharsis" developed into one of Western philosophy's greatest questions: why is it that people are drawn to watching tragic heroes suffer horrible fates? Aristotle's ideas revolve around three crucial effects: First, the audience develops an emotional attachment to the tragic hero second, the audience fears what may befall the hero and finally (after misfortune strikes) the audience pities the suffering hero. In his famous "Poetics," the philosopher Aristotle laid the foundations for literary criticism of Greek tragedy. ![]() 5/28/2023 0 Comments The Long Walk by Richard Bachman![]() ![]() My advice, buy this and The Running Man and write a letter to the publisher telling them how much you hate them. ![]() Yes, it is a cheek to narrate only three out of the four Bachman books and then sell them individually rather than as a full collection. Each is memorable, given their time in both the sun and the rain and you feel for them in the way you'd be hard pressed to feel for any contemporary young adult protagonist. It works too, having drawn just deep enough into the world to flesh out the walkers. Indeed, the characters make the book so memorable given that there is no real plot, instead reading what amounts to the analogue version of reality television. Heyborne's range is also accomplished enough to do justice to the voices, particularly those of Stebbins and Barkovitch who are the kind of characters that truly need nuance. It takes a while to get used to the pitch of Kirkby Heyborne's voice but given the average age of the walkers is around seventeen, it makes sense. ![]() The late Richard Bachman's best work after The Running Man (Rage is sadly out of print, apparently forever now) and finally on Audible.
